What began as a creative programme in 1996 has evolved into a multidisciplinary platform for engagement, development and intervention — built on lived experience, community trust and an unwavering belief in human potential.
RAP ACADEMY BEGINS
RAP Academy was established through Music Communication 'N' Life Skills, using music not simply as entertainment, but as a gateway to engagement, self-expression, literacy, confidence, identity and personal development.
From the beginning, the purpose was bigger than creating artists. Music was the engagement tool; developing people was the purpose.
CREATIVITY WITH PURPOSE
RAP Academy expanded its work with young people through songwriting, performance, music workshops, communication and life-skills development.
Young people were encouraged to explore real issues affecting their lives — including identity, peer pressure, violence, relationships, aspiration and purpose — through creativity, reflection and structured conversation.
This established a principle that remains central to RAP Academy today: engage the person first, then create the conditions for deeper development.
A GENERATION FINDS ITS VOICE
RAP Academy provided a creative space where young people could develop confidence, expression and identity through music and structured personal development.
Among those young people was Stormzy, who attended RAP Academy from the age of 11. The BBC later documented that, at 11, he was winning rap battles at his local youth club, Rap Academy — an early chapter in the journey of an artist who would go on to become one of the UK's most influential contemporary musicians.

RAP Academy continued to evolve beyond its original creative programme into mentoring, education, personal development and crime-prevention work.
Programmes including RAP Mentors, Music 'N' Youth and Re-adJUST strengthened the Academy's capacity to work relationally with young people experiencing exclusion, disadvantage and involvement, or risk of involvement, in the criminal justice system.
The principle remained consistent: build the relationship first, understand the individual, then use structured intervention to support progression.
MENTORING & PROGRESSION
RAP Mentors developed an intergenerational approach combining positive adult role models, peer mentoring, family engagement and progression opportunities.
Young people were supported not simply to receive help, but, where appropriate, to develop their own leadership, responsibility and capacity to become positive influences within their families, peer groups and communities.

Reggie Yates: Teen Gangs
RAP Mentors was featured in the hour-long BBC Three documentary Reggie Yates: Teen Gangs, exploring gang involvement, mentoring and pathways towards positive change.
The documentary featured RAP Mentors and its work with young people at risk of gang involvement, with founder Dr David Williams appearing in his then role as Project Manager.

REACHING ALL PEOPLE TRUST CIC
After two decades of community-rooted delivery, the work was formalised through Reaching All People Trust CIC (RAP Trust).
RAP Trust provides the governance, safeguarding and organisational infrastructure behind an expanding portfolio of programmes, interventions and partnerships while maintaining the community-rooted ethos from which RAP Academy developed.
A MULTIDISCIPLINARY PLATFORM
RAP Academy's original principle — using credible engagement as the gateway to deeper development — has continued to evolve.
Today, the wider RAP ecosystem includes specialist work spanning creative and digital learning, mentoring, violence reduction, personal development and employability, health and wellbeing, men and families, custody, rehabilitation and reintegration.
This includes programmes and platforms such as RAP Academy®, RAP Digital Music Lab®, RAP Records®, Straight 2 Da Point® (S2DP®), RAP Mentors, 360Program, Harvesting Man's Potential (HMP) and Temple Fitness.

From Music Communication 'N' Life Skills in 1996 to a multidisciplinary intervention platform today, the methods have evolved while the underlying purpose remains:

Across RAP Academy, RAP Mentors, Reaching All People and the wider body of work developed since 1996, we estimate that more than 220,000 people have been reached through mentoring, education, creative engagement, community programmes, violence reduction, criminal justice interventions and outreach.
The history matters. But the work continues.
Recognised Across Statutory Practice
Across its history, RAP Academy® and its leadership have received recognition from statutory partners for contributions to violence reduction, criminal justice practice and improved outcomes for young people.
Recognition includes London Probation Trust acknowledging RAP Academy for its "Outstanding Contribution to the Serious Group Offending Agenda".
In 2024, Dr David Williams also received a Metropolitan Police Service Central North BCU commendation recognising his "determination, courage and empathy" in the delivery of an intervention designed to work for police officers while achieving the best outcomes for young people.
These recognitions sit within a wider track record of partnership working across community, education and criminal justice settings.

Lived Experience Consultant | Community Justice Practitioner | Creator of The Decision Corridor®
Dr David Williams is the founder of RAP Academy, a Lived Experience Consultant, Community Justice Practitioner, and creator of The Decision Corridor® — a trauma-informed behavioural reflection framework exploring the critical space between impulse and action.
Drawing on lived experience, doctoral research in Community Justice, and decades of frontline practice, his work spans criminal justice, violence reduction, restorative practice, safeguarding, mentoring and community transformation.
At the heart of his approach is a simple but powerful proposition: harmful behaviour rarely begins at the moment of action. Before the action comes a corridor of emotion, thought, identity, environmental pressure and choice. The Decision Corridor® helps individuals and professionals recognise what is happening within that space, interrupt reactive patterns, consider consequence and develop more reflective and accountable responses under pressure.
Dr Williams established RAP Academy in 1996 through Music Communication 'N' Life Skills, using creativity, mentoring and lived experience to engage young people whom mainstream systems often struggled to reach. That work has developed into a broader multidisciplinary approach supporting young people, adults, practitioners and institutions across community, education and criminal justice settings.
His work today brings together behavioural reflection, emotional regulation, identity reconstruction, restorative accountability and culturally competent, trauma-informed practice — helping individuals and institutions move beyond reaction towards reflection, accountability and more constructive decision-making.
